The Party of European Socialists condemns the brutal premeditated attack against former Georgian Prime Minister and leader of the opposition party, For Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia, on January 14-15.

The incident in question saw Gakharia attacked by 10 men in a hotel in Batumi, Georgia. Gakharia is reported to have suffered a concussion and a broken nose in the incident in Batumi on the Black Sea coast. He was later treated in hospital.

The PES is alarmed by reports of democratic backsliding in Georgia and attacks on peaceful protestors and opposition politicians. We call for an investigation into the incident against Gakharia, and we continue to stand with Georgians fighting for democracy and upholding the rule of law.
