PES President Sergei Stanishev said, “It is a proud moment for our political family to see Federica nominated for this prestigious and important post. Europe faces challenges at its borders which impact the lives of our citizens, and Federica will play an important role in addressing them. Our foreign policy has a huge impact on our daily lives, and I believe that the progressive approach Federica brings will win many friends and offer new opportunities for Europe. Her nomination is an important success in our efforts for a gender balanced and progressive European Union. We will continue our work to ensure that the European Commission as a whole also reflects these priorities.”
Achim Post, PES Secretary General, said, “I have known Federica for many years and worked closely with her on both domestic and foreign policy issues. She has always been a great friend of the Party of European Socialists, an incredibly active member of the Partito Democratico, and a key part of its relations with sister parties in Europe and around the world. We are extremely proud to see a new generation of leaders emerging from the Socialist and Democrat family, and connecting with a new generation of European citizens.”
Federica Mogherini will take up her post as High Representative of the Europen Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, on 1 November.
