PES Secretary General Achim Post stated that; “These elections prove that the Czech Republic, just as the rest of Europe, is exhausted by austerity. In the last weeks, Czech voters have turned their back on the destructive, self-defeating policies of the Conservative governing coalition. By giving their support to the ČSSD, they acknowledge that only growth and progressive values can get us out of the crisis”.
Mr. Post added: “I want to congratulate Bohuslav Sobotka, his team and activists for all the work they have done. The ČSSD has a clear vision based on the social democratic principle that people must always come first. In the future, the PES will continue working closely with the ČSSD to tackle the effects of the crisis and achieve a long-term, and deeply social, economic sustainability”.
In these elections, the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) – the Conservative party of Prime Minister Petr Nečas –got their lowest number of seats in the history of the Czech Senate. ČSSD leader Bohuslav Sobotka stated: “People have clearly showed that they want social democratic policies”.
