In the last few months issues had arisen with statements made by Slovakian Prime Minister and party leader Robert Fico, to which PES President Sergei Stanishev and member parties expressed their deep concern.
As a result of the SMER statements the PES opened a process of internal discussion and clarification. Prime Minister Robert Fico then met with Sergei Stanishev and Gianni Pittella – President of the Socialist and Democrat Group in the European Parliament, on 5 October in Strasbourg. Mr Fico also addressed the Socialist and Democrat group. Today SMER First Vice-President Pavol Paška discussed with member parties in the PES Presidency – the highest internal party body.
Ahead of the meeting the PES received a letter from Prime Minister Fico on 8 October in which he underlined that he shares and respects PES values. In the letter PES member parties received assurances that Slovakia will help anyone in need without discrimination. The letter clarified the SMER position and committed them to respecting PES values.
The PES will continue to monitor the situation.
