European Socialists and Democrats are deeply worried by the attempts of the Israeli government to diminish the role of the judiciary in the country. Israeli parliament on Monday passed a controversial bill, which strips the Supreme Court of the power to declare government decisions unreasonable.

PES president Stefan Löfven said:
“The controversial law, pushed forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, raises serious concerns. The rule of law in Israel is under threat. We stand by our sister parties in Israel and with all those who support democracy in the country and protested the law.”

The approval of the controversial law by the Knesset yesterday came despite the massive protests in Israel, which are ongoing for months. All members of the opposition left the chamber while the roll call vote was taking place. The PES leadership has been in contact with Merav Michaeli, leader of the PES observer member party Havoda, and extends its full support to its other observer member party Meretz and the whole democratic opposition in Israel.
