The Party of European Socialists mourns the death of Jimmy Carter, a former U.S. President, a Democrat and a relentless fighter for peace, democracy and human rights. His efforts to bring peace in the Middle East and to abate the nuclear arms race during the Cold War made a historical impact on the future of mankind.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
In such difficult times as the late 70’s and early 80’s, a period of multiple international conflicts and the zenith of the Cold War while in office, and in the years to follow with the Carter Center, President Jimmy Carter became an example of political wisdom and effective diplomacy that shaped the future of the modern world. Today, as we face no lesser challenges, our mission is to continue his legacy of finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, exercising multilateralism and striving to leave a better world for future generations.”
Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981 and was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, passed away this Sunday at the age of 100.
He will be remembered.
