The Party of European Socialists warmly welcomes the strong results obtained by its member party PASOK in the second round of the Greek regional elections yesterday. PASOK won 75 municipalities including in the two biggest cities: Athens and Thessaloniki.

PES President Stefan Löfven said:

“We are proud of PASOK’s strong results in the local and regional elections, and we are enthusiastic about the new political trend they signal both for PASOK – a founding member of the PES – and for Greece. I congratulate the newly elected mayors of Athens and Thessaloniki, Haris Doukas and Stelios Ageloudis, on their strong performance and Nikos Androulakis on the great overall performance of PASOK, a party of progress and responsibility, leading the way forward for Greece.”

PASOK already managed victories in the first round of the regional election, notably in Crete. After Sunday’s second round, PASOK will also be in the lead of three major Greek municipalities, those of Athens, Thessaloniki and Piraeus. PASOK also won the region of Thessalia, recently devasted by catastrophic floods. The PES believes this electoral win turns the page for the thousands of people affected by the floods and for thousands more throughout Greece demanding social policies that ensure the wellbeing of citizens.
