The Party of European Socialists (PES) condemns the latest far-right attacks in Spain, which are using spurious claims to harass Begoña Gómez, her husband Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and their family.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“From what one can understand of this alarming context, the natural reaction can only be to stand with Begoña, Pedro and their family against these malicious attacks. We know that Begoña will defend her honour and will cooperate fully to clarify the facts and defend herself against these accusations. We salute her courage and express our full solidarity with her, Pedro, their family and the whole PSOE community.
“The signals coming from Spain overnight are very concerning. They point to a very alarming situation. Judicial proceedings are being weaponised by the far-right to attack the integrity of politics and tear apart the fabric of democracy.
“A coalition of right-wing and ultra-right interests cannot tolerate the reality of Spain, will not accept the verdict of the polls, and will stoop to the lowest levels in an attempt to destabilise Spain.”
European social democracy remains firm in defending democracy and the dignity of our institutions in the face of all types of attacks from the right and extreme right. The PES reacted to the attack against Sanchez last night with a comment by the PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck.
