Today’s vote in the European Parliament to agree on a position on the Nature Restoration Law represents a great day for biodiversity protection in Europe. The result marks a progressive victory in the fight for a sustainable future for people and planet.
Members of the European Parliament rejected centre-right and far-right scaremongering in Plenary and voted to back the Law, which has the clear support of scientists, NGOs, young people, businesses and many others.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Today progressives delivered a victory for Europe’s nature. Thanks to the efforts of Frans Timmermans, César Luena, the entire S&D Group and many others, we have taken a positive step forward towards real biodiversity protection.
“We are proud of our efforts to protect the environment and we will continue to advocate for strong EU action. We must protect nature from the devastating effects of the climate crisis. The science is clear on that and today MEPs agreed.”
The PES commends the work of European Parliament rapporteur on the file César Luena and European Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, who spearheaded the file as part of the progressive European Green Deal.
Last month, governments from across the political spectrum agreed on a general approach on the Law in the Council of the EU. The green light from the Parliament today means negotiations on the final Law will begin with the Council.
Today’s vote means the EU is making progress on action to protect the one million species around the globe that are at risk of extinction, and the 80% of habitats in the EU that are in poor or bad condition.
