The Party of European Socialists (PES) expresses its deep shock and sadness at the shooting which took place earlier today at the Vladislav Ribnikar primary school in Belgrade, Serbia.

Eight children and a school security guard were killed and a further six pupils and a teacher were injured in the shooting. A 14-year-old boy, who had been a pupil at the school, has been arrested.

PES Vice President Radmila Šekerinska said:

“I send my deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this terrible shooting. Our thoughts are with them and the students, their parents, and the staff of the school. This is a deeply sad day for Serbia.

“Schools are a place for young people to learn and grow, to live life to the fullest. An atmosphere of violence must never be allowed into this space. For the sake of our children and the health of our society, we must work together to rid our schools of this tragic violence.”
