“Martin Schulz led an excellent election campaign across Europe. The initiative of our PES family to propose the common candidate process has strengthened European democracy.” Said Stanishev. “Our S&D Group has remained the only stable force in the European Parliament, while the EPP lost 20% of its vote, and other mainstream Groups also suffered. We must now give Martin Schulz a mandate to negotiate a strong package of top positions and policy priorities for the next five years. As President of the PES, I offer my help to him in this important role.”
Stanishev will chair a meeting of the PES Presidency on 19 June in Brussels. He will then bring together PES Heads of State and Government for a Pre-Council meeting in Ypres on 26 June, ahead of the expected nomination by the European Council of the next European Commission President on 27 June.
