Statement by PES on PES Congress 2015 in reply to story that appeared online on 26th September

Speaking from Bulgaria, Sergei Stanishev said that he was “disappointed” with the inaccurate reporting by Euractiv.

The story, published on 26th September, referenced the preparations for the PES Congress. Stanishev said that he had had a very pleasant conversation with French Parti Socialiste spokesperson for Europe, Philip Cordery, who was cited in the story. Mr. Cordery told the PES President today (26th September), that he had been quoted out of context. Mr. Stanishev said that the whole PES team, and political family was; “working excellently in the best interests of its member parties”.

PES General Secretary Achim Post said that; “The PES Congress is a regular PES statutory event. It is normal procedure that the PES President’s mandate is renewed every two years. Sergei has long indicated that he will ask for this renewal. Indeed the Bulgarian Socialists Party (BSP) has already taken a popular decision that they will put his name forward. Together with Sergei we are looking forward to planning for the PES congress and the strategic challenges for the years following”.

The PES Presidency (executive committee) will meet on 9 October.
