The PES is deeply concerned about the political developments in Italy after the resignation of prime minister Mario Draghi.
The Democratic Party in Italy remains the most reliable pro-European political force as the other parties in the collapsed coalition didn’t do anything to support Draghi and to ensure stability for Italy and for Europe.
Italy’s political turmoil came at a very difficult moment with Europe is facing worrying inflation levels, the ongoing war in Ukraine and a possible new COVID wave.
PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“Draghi has been an important partner and a key figure at the EU level in this challenging time for Italy and for Europe. Enrico Letta and the Democratic Party in Italy (PD) did the right thing supporting him in such a complicated coalition where Salvini, Berlusconi or Conte were driven more by their own agenda and ambitions than by the interests of the Italian citizens. I commend Enrico Letta for his efforts to find a solution for the government crisis until the very last moment. Letta and the PD have shown what it takes to be at the service of the country. I am confident Italian voters will remember that on during the upcoming general election in Italy.”
The PES is concerned about the future political path of Italy not only because of the rising wave of the far-right parties in the country but because of the position of some European parties, such as EPP, who are now thanking Mario Draghi for his service, but their Italian member Forza Italia didn’t do anything to support him.
