PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “This legal step will allow for Europe to sit at the table at COP 22, the next global climate change conference to be hosted in November in Marrakesh. But, most importantly, it shows that the EU can deliver quickly on issues that matter to people and that our input as a political family can make the difference.”
The PES together with the Danish Social Democratic Party will organise the conference “Leading change – European for green growth and climate action” in Copenhagen on 12 October to discuss the run-up to the Marrakesh summit.
The vote in the European Parliament completes the ratification procedure initiated by the environment ministers of the EU with their approval last week. Sergei Stanishev said: “I am very happy that the EU is taking the lead in the agreement that will replace the Kyoto Protocol to tackle global warming. I am also delighted that our political family steered this process, from the presentation of our 21 progressive proposals for COP 21, to the great leadership showed by the French Presidency during the Paris summit.”
The Paris agreement is the first to gather universal support. The great negotiating skills of the French government, led by Parti Socialiste, were instrumental in achieving it.
