A defining moment for Hungary’s democracy, driven by its citizens. High voter turnout reflects a strong mobilisation and a clear determination to shape the country’s future.
After 16 years of Fidesz government under Viktor Orbán, this moment marks a clear turning point and a demand for change, for democracy, European values and the rule of law.
The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the engagement of the Hungarian people and their commitment to these principles. This moment signals a renewed expectation for Hungary to fully re-engage at the heart of the European Union.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“The Hungarian people have spoken. They said “Enough” to Viktor Orban and his failed governance. In a moment of uncertainty, Hungarians made their voices count in a clear call for democracy, fairness, and respect for the rule of law. Now it’s up to the winner in the election – Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party to fulfil the expectations of the Hungarian people and focus on the judicial reforms, media freedom, and better EU cooperation.”
The PES also acknowledges the Democratic Coalition (DK), led by Klára Dobrev, and thanks her for her continued commitment to defending democratic values.
The European Union now looks to Hungary to move forward in line with its core principles, strengthening trust, stability, and EU cooperation in supporting Ukraine.
