PES congratulates Prime Minister Sanna Marin on election as leader of SDP Finland

The Finnish Prime Minister today received the backing of party delegates to take the role at the SDP congress in Tampere.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“On behalf of the European socialist and democratic family I send my warm congratulations to Sanna on her election as leader of SDP Finland.

“Sanna stepped up as Prime Minister right before Finland, Europe and the whole world faced tough challenges because of COVID-19. Thanks to her leadership, Finland has emerged from the initial stage of this crisis in a strong position to achieve a fair and sustainable recovery, for Finland and the EU.

“I am delighted that Europe’s youngest woman prime minster is now taking the reins of her party. I look forward to continuing our work with Sanna and the SDP as we fight for a progressive recovery together.”

Sanna Marin takes over as leader of the SDP from Antti Rinne, who stepped as down as Prime Minister of Finland last year but agreed to continue as chair until the next congress. We commend all his efforts and we thank him for the long-lasting partnership.

Special measures at this congress – which kicked off on Saturday and ends on Monday – have been put in place to ensure it can safely go ahead. Delegates will adopt the SDP’s political programme and resolutions on international and domestic affairs.
