The Party of European Socialists (PES) applauds the decision taken by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to continue to lead the country, undeterred by the attacks from the far-right against him and his family.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Massive demonstrations in Spain have made it clear that society demands a deep reflection and action to defend democracy and decency in public life. Our political family stands united against these antidemocratic forces, which operate at an international level. This harassment campaign against Prime Minister Sanchez and his wife, Begoña Gómez, is not an isolated case, and these smear attacks will continue unless we put an end to a political discourse rooted in hate.
We as socialists, social democrats, and progressives, as well as the entire democratic community in the EU, are affected by the loom of right-wing coalitions and the ultra-right attempts to undermine democracy. We need to reinforce dignity in politics globally.
As the Party of European Socialists, we are doing the utmost to elevate the public discourse in this 2024 European Elections campaign.”
