The Party of European Socialists (PES) congratulates President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), on their historic victory in Brazil’s presidential elections.
Millions of Brazilians have made their voices heard, reaffirming the power of democracy and the importance of protecting it. In a deeply divided political climate, this result is a powerful reminder that the future of a country belongs to its people, and that their democratic choice must be respected.
On the eve of the elections, PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck was in São Paulo, Brazil, where he joined the “Caminhada do Lula”, a mobilisation in support of President Lula and the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). His presence demonstrated the solidarity of the European progressive family with Brazilian progressives and reaffirmed the PES’s commitment to democracy, social justice, gender equality and environmental protection. During his visit, he also followed the electoral process, including the vote count.

PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Today, I want to congratulate my dear friend Lula on this remarkable victory. But above all, I want to pay tribute to the Brazilian people.
Democracy is not something we inherit and can take for granted. It is something we must defend, protect and renew, generation after generation. And today, millions of Brazilians have reminded the world of the extraordinary power of their vote.
At a time when so many people feel uncertain about the future, Brazil gives us a reason to believe that hope can overcome fear, that solidarity can overcome division, and that the promise of a better tomorrow is worth fighting for.
Lula knows what it means to fight for democracy, for dignity and for those whose voices too often go unheard. His victory carries a message far beyond Brazil: the future is never written by those who spread fear, but by the people who refuse to give up on hope.
Congratulations, my friend. We stand with you and with the Brazilian people.”
The PES welcomes this result as an opportunity to strengthen the longstanding ties between European and Brazilian progressives and to deepen cooperation on democracy, social justice, climate action, multilateralism and international peace.
At a time of growing global polarisation and challenges to democratic institutions, the PES reiterates its commitment to working with President Lula and the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) to advance a more just, equal and peaceful world.
Democracy requires constant commitment. The Brazilian people have made their choice. Their voice must be heard and respected.
