The Party of European Socialists (PES) congratulates the Student List on its historic victory in Serbia’s parliamentary elections, marking a turning point for democracy in the country and opening a new chapter of hope for its people.
After nearly two years of student-led protests demanding accountability, justice and democratic change, the people of Serbia have made their voices heard at the ballot box. In an election marked by historic voter turnout, the Student List secured a projected parliamentary majority, ending more than a decade of political dominance by Aleksandar Vučić and his allies.
The movement, which began in the streets following the tragic collapse of the Novi Sad railway station canopy in November 2024, has grown into a nationwide demand for justice, transparency and democratic renewal. Despite serious reports of voter intimidation and electoral irregularities, citizens turned out in extraordinary numbers to shape their country’s future.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Democracy belongs to the people. Not to those who hold on to power, not to those who try to silence dissent, but to those who refuse to give up on a better future.
What we have witnessed in Serbia is a powerful reminder that courage can overcome fear, that hope can outlast intimidation, and that no political power is stronger than the will of a people determined to be heard.
To the students who refused to remain silent, to the young people who stood up for justice, and to every citizen who believed that change was possible: you have shown that democracy is not simply inherited. It is defended, renewed and carried forward by every generation.
Today, Serbia has given hope not only to its own people, but to all those across Europe who believe in freedom, dignity and democracy.”
The PES underlines that this historic result must now be followed by a peaceful and democratic transition, full respect for the electoral process, and renewed efforts to strengthen independent institutions, media freedom and the rule of law.
Together with our sister parties, the Democratic Party (DS) and the Party of Freedom and Justice (SSP), the PES remains committed to supporting the Serbian people in building a fairer, more democratic and European future.
The future of Serbia belongs to its people. And they have made their voices heard.
