The Party of European Socialists (PES) strongly condemns the Israeli government’s latest steps towards annexation in the West Bank, including new land registration measures that risk dispossessing Palestinians of their property and further tightening control over the occupied territory.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that these measures could expand Israeli control and undermine international law, recalling that settlement activity in occupied territory is unlawful and incompatible with a just and lasting peace.

More than 80 Member States at the United Nations have also voiced clear opposition to measures that alter the legal and demographic reality on the ground.

Settlements in occupied territory are illegal under international law and erode the foundations of the two-state solution.

Stefan Löfven, President of the PES, said:

“Actions that entrench occupation and move towards annexation are unacceptable. They undermine international law and close the door to peace. Europe cannot remain silent when the foundations of the two-state solution are being eroded. Security for Israelis and dignity and statehood for the Palestinian people must go hand in hand. We call for an immediate halt to actions leading to annexation, full respect for international law and renewed diplomatic efforts under a multilateral framework.

In this regard, we believe that the so-called Board of Peace jeopardises peace efforts if Palestinians are not represented, and that peace negotiations should be made through the already existing UN framework.”

The PES calls for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, the release of all hostages, the protection of civilians, and renewed diplomatic efforts to secure a viable two-state solution in line with international law.

It also calls on the European Union to respond with unity and determination, upholding international law and ensuring that its external action remains consistent with its principles. Peace and security must serve both the Israeli and Palestinian people
