The Party of European Socialists (PES) expresses its deep sadness at the passing of Leïla Chahid, a distinguished Palestinian diplomat who served as Palestinian Representative to Belgium and the European Union.
For many years in Brussels, Leïla Chahid was one of the most recognisable diplomatic voices advocating for the rights and self-determination of the Palestinian people. Her eloquence, courage and unwavering commitment to dialogue left a lasting mark on European political and cultural life.
From her early engagement following the 1967 war to her work with the Palestine Liberation Organization, Leïla Chahid dedicated her life to diplomacy and political dialogue. She served as the Palestinian representative to Ireland, the Netherlands and Denmark, before becoming Delegate General of Palestine to France (1993–2005) and later Palestinian Representative to Belgium and the European Union (2006–2015).
During her years in Brussels, she became one of the most prominent Palestinian diplomatic voices in Europe, building strong relationships across political families, European institutions and civil society. She consistently argued that respect for international law, human dignity and the prospect of a two-state solution must guide any sustainable peace in the Middle East.
PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:
“Leïla Chahid was a powerful and principled voice for her people. In Brussels, she engaged tirelessly with European leaders, parliamentarians, and civil society, reminding us that peace requires courage, dialogue, and respect for international law. Her passing is a profound loss for all those who believe in a just and lasting two-state solution. Her legacy reminds us that diplomacy, grounded in international law and human dignity, remains indispensable.”
Leïla Chahid’s commitment to justice and dialogue continues to resonate at a time when the region faces immense suffering and instability. Her legacy reminds us that diplomacy, even in the most difficult moments, remains essential.
The Party of European Socialists extends its sincere condolences to her family, friends, and the Palestinian people.
