PES calls for tight grip on the financial sector 10 years after Lehman
The Party of European Socialists calls for a tighter grip on the financial sector 10 years after the crash of Lehman Brothers.
PES president Sergei Stanishev said: “We are still dealing with the social consequences of the financial meltdown from 10 years ago. Our economies are weaker and our democracies are weaker as a result”.

The Party of European Socialists welcomes the vote in the European Parliament today which saw MEPs voting to trigger Article 7 (1) of the EU Treaty with 448 votes in favour and 197 against. The procedure is used in cases of serious breach of the values on which the Union is founded and could see Hungary’s voting rights in the Council suspended.
PES: Time for the EPP to choose, pro-Orbán or pro-European
The Party of European Socialists fully supports the efforts of the European Parliament to safeguard the democratic basis on which the European Union is founded by calling for triggering article 7 (1) of the EU Treaty against the Hungarian government.
PES Secretary General: It is not the EPP alone who will decide on the next European Commission president
On Manfred Weber’s bid for common candidate of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the next European election, PES Secretary General Achim Post said:
“It is still unclear whether Manfred Weber will be able to have the support of his political family and run as their common candidate. But one thing is for sure: it is not the EPP award commute that will decide who the next EU Commission president will be, but the European citizens through their votes. They will decide what the balance of power will be like in the European institutions.
