04/06/2015 The PES supports its sister parties ahead of the elections in Turkey
On Sunday 7 June, Turkish citizens will choose the 550 members who will represent them in the Turkish Parliament. The elections are taking place in a climate of increased restrictions of freedom, imposed by President Erdoğan of the leading AKP Party. Recent crackdowns on media channels, journalists and social media networks have made it difficult for political parties to campaign. The electoral threshold of 10 per cent also represents a huge obstacle for smaller parties wanting to take part in the democratic debate.
29/05/2015 PES announces candidates for Presidency
Sergei Stanishev and Enrique Barón have been announced as the two candidates for the position of PES President. The vote for, and announcement of, the next President will take place at the PES Congress on 12 June 2015 in Budapest, Hungary. Both are experienced politicians at National and European levels, having had careers in both the domestic and European political spheres.

25/05/2015 European Socialist and Democrat leaders address Mediterranean challenges
In the wake of tragic human catastrophes, and ongoing conflict, Socialist and Democratic leaders met in Rome to discuss progressive answers to foreign, security and development policy issues in the Middle East and North Africa. Leaders attending from the socialist family included key stakeholders in the region including EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Paolo Gentiloni, Leader of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, PES president Sergei Stanishev and Khelil Ezzaouia former Tunisian minister of social affairs.
24/05/2015 PES Welcomes Irish YES to Equality
“This result is yet another example of what we as a Social Democratic family can do when we work together to reduce inequality” said PES President Sergei Stanishev. Today, the people of Ireland have made history by voting YES to same sex marriage. This isn’t something that has just suddenly come about, it has happened because the Irish Labour Party campaigned for a referendum on this issue, and got a commitment to it included in their programme for Government.

Progressive parties and organizations from all over the world came together on 22-23 May in Rotterdam to participate to the Conference “Gender Equality and Decent Work”. The event was organized by the Progressive Alliance, in cooperation with the PvdA (Labour Party, Netherlands) and the Party of European Socialists putting forward a concrete action plan on gender equality as well as combining debates with on the ground visits on the issue.

The Party of European Socialists has today welcomed the European Parliament’s vote calling for the European Commission to make a new legislative proposal in order to unblock the discussions on the Maternity Leave directive.
18/05/2015 PES Ministers agree on a common strategy to strengthen the Economic and Monetary Union
The European Affairs Ministers of the Party of European Socialists (PES) met today at the PES Headquarters in Brussels to prepare for the General Affairs Council meeting of 19 May 2015. The Ministers had the chance to discuss measures for strengthening the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in light of the report to be presented in June by the Four Institutions Presidents, namely the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council, the President of the Eurogroup, and the President of the European Central Bank on the same topic. The Ministers highlighted the need to deepen the integration of the Economic and Monetary Union, in particular by strengthening its social dimension, developing better coordination of fiscal policies, and reinforcing the existing banking union.
