As the Republican People’s Party (CHP) gathers in Ankara for its 39th Ordinary Congress, the Party of European Socialists (PES) sends a strong message of solidarity to its sister party and to all those defending democracy and fundamental rights in Türkiye.

The PES and the CHP have, over many years, built a close political partnership grounded in democracy, social justice, equality and human dignity. CHP leader Özgür Özel took part in the PES Congress in Amsterdam last month, highlighting the close ties between our parties and our shared commitment to democracy and social justice. On the occasion of the CHP Congress, the PES reciprocates that supportby clearly reaffirming our friendship, cooperation and solidarity with the CHP.

Ouralliance goes beyond day-to-day politics: it is rooted in a common vision of a future in which freedom, rights and justice are fully respected. This Congress strengthens not only the CHP’s position in Türkiye’s political landscape, but also the wider democratic opposition at a time of mounting political pressure.

PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:

“The CHP is at the heart of the democratic struggle in Türkiye. The PES stands firmly by our sister party and by all those who, often under tremendous pressure, continue to defend pluralism, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. Our solidarity is strong, consistent and unwavering.

As we did from Amsterdam during the PES Congress, we once again call for the release of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and of all those unjustly imprisoned for their political views, including political opponents, journalists, academics and human rights defenders. Democracy cannot thrive when critical voices are silenced or criminalised.

That is why this Congress sends a clear message of hope to all those who believe in democracy, social justice and the rule of law. The PES will continue to support all those in Türkiye who work for a freer, fairer and more democratic society.”

At a time when opposition parties, elected representatives and peaceful protesters face growing pressure, the PES recalls that genuine democracy requires open political competition, an independent judiciary and full respect for fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, association and assembly. In this spirit, the PES once again reiterates its call for the release of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, in full respect of democratic choice, due process and the rule of law in Türkiye.

The PES will continue to work closely with the CHP to support a future based on democracy, social justice and fundamental rights for all citizens.
