PES heralds news SPD to play leading role in new government

From left to right: CSU leader Markus Söder, CDU leader Friedrich Merz, SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil, and SPD co-leader Saskia Esken.

Today, our member party, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), reached an agreement in Germany to form a coalition with centrist parties, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU).

We commend the SPD’s leadership for concluding the coalition agreement in the face of challenging times, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, the unprecedented tariffs presented by US President Trump, and the threats to our democracy by the far right. The SPD’s leadership gave an example of democratic responsibility and commitment to the stability and prosperity of German society and for the good of German citizens.

Commenting on the formation of the government, PES President Stefan Löfven said:

‘The agreement on a coalition treaty between the leaderships of the SPD and the CDU/CSU in Germany is a clear and important signal of democratic responsibility and stability in challenging times – both for Germany and Europe. Under the co-leadership of Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken, the SPD is putting people at the forefront of their government programme, which is underlined by their commitment to enhancing investments, raising the minimum wage, securing a strong European focus and upholding our progressive values.
In doing so, the SPD has laid the ground for a modern, secure and fair Germany, that seizes its European responsibility.”

Now it is up to the SPD members to have their say on the coalition agreement before it can be formally adopted.
