PES President Sergei Stanishev underlined that; “under the leadership of the Democratic Party, Serbia made tremendous progress in the past years, obtaining EU candidate status and implementing crucial and much needed reforms. This Congress has shown very clearly a solid, united and credible progressive force for Serbia and the region as a whole. This movement will continue its commitment to tackle the most pressing issues facing the Serbian people, including unemployment and growing inequalities”.
Mr. Stanishev also wished Mr. Djilas a successful mandate saying that; “This Congress reiterates the importance, for both the country and the party, to put forward a new social agenda for the next four years. I am confident that the Democratic Party, playing an active role within our social democratic family, will be the cornerstone of Serbia’s pro-European progressivism”.
The DS is a PES member party and the main opposition force in Serbia. Its pro-European, progressive alternative to the current majority represents a crucial voice in the present political landscape of the country.
