As we approach the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Carnation Revolution, the Party of European Socialists applauds Partido Socialista (PS) and its leader Pedro Nuno Santos for an election campaign focused on the defence of democracy and the rights of all Portuguese people.
With votes from abroad still being counted, PS is neck and neck with PSD and still in the race to be the largest individual party. But as has happened in other parts of Europe, a strong result for the far-right has shifted the overall balance of power.
PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:
“The fierce spirit and determination of the socialists throughout the campaign, and Pedro Nuno Santos’ tireless defence of social progress and justice, are an inspiration. The PS is the voice that brings a vision of hope to all Portuguese citizens. Thanks to its work, the country has achieved key milestones in the last decade: a complete break with austerity policies, increased pensions and wages, a stable economy, a clear path to sustainability, as well as the protection of women’s rights and LGBTI+ communities. This is a legacy we can all be proud of.
“PS fought a strong campaign against political forces that want to tear up that legacy. As the far-right surge demonstrated, it is time to step up the fight for the hard-fought rights won 50 years ago during the 25 April Carnation revolution.
“We are determined to stand firmly in defence of the most vulnerable, and against those who threaten social progress, social rights and democracy. This is not just the fight in Portugal, but the fight across Europe.”
The PS can be proud of its campaign and can always count on PES to continue building a better society for all. A society that is social, democratic, and sustainable. As Pedro Nuno Santos clearly stated, “Our journey starts now!”
