Following yesterday’s federal election in Germany, the Party of European Socialists stands shoulder to shoulder with Olaf Scholz, the SPD and the work delivered under his chancellorship in difficult times.
Democratic forces remain the political stronghold in Germany, with citizens giving them the large majority of their votes. The enormous turnout of 82,5% furthermore testifies to a healthy democracy. It is a strong signal against attempts from Elon Musk to weaken democracy. A strong democratic Germany is vital for a strong democratic Europe.
At the same time, the unprecedented result of the far-right AfD in a federal election is of grave concern.
PES President, Stefan Löfven, said:
”In the face of growing uncertainty, various attacks on our existing world order and a challenging political environment in Germany, Olaf Scholz has managed to steer Germany safely through these turbulent times. The German government led by Scholz has played a fundamental role in delivering a united and determined response to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, and in promoting a common security for Europe. Acting in the name of stability and responsibility, Scholz led his coalition to realise these objectives and to deliver on policies in the interest of citizens.
On behalf of the PES, I would like to deeply thank him for his commitment as a trustful partner, a much-needed ally to the whole social democratic party and for being a good friend.”
PES Secretary General, Giacomo Filibeck said:
“The PES continues to strongly support the SPD in its fight against far-right forces and its commitment to protecting the fundamental values of the rule of law and democracy that built the Federal Republic. We also call upon the CDU and Friedrich Merz to uphold the firewall, as declared after the election results. As upholding the firewall is pivotal in Germany, the PES reiterates its call to the EPP to refrain from cooperating with the far-right also at European level.”
The European Socialists and Democrats believe that the SPD will continue, united, to rebuild its strength, uphold the firewall, and deliver on behalf of Germans. As party co-leader Lars Klingbeil highlighted on election night, the SPD is ready to take responsibility and sets out to attain the trust of the majority of German citizens.
