Good public services, social fairness and more cohesion communities – this is the agenda that Parti Socialiste (PS) and Vooruit will put into practice over the next five years in municipalities across Belgium. The Party of European Socialists commends its two Belgian full member parties on their strong results at the local elections on Sunday.

PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:

“From Brussels to Charleroi, from Leuven to Gent, socialists across Belgium will continue to shape their communities for the better. I warmly congratulate PS and Vooruit on these excellent results.

“Our movement is built on the drive to deliver for people. Across Belgium we will continue to lead that change at the local level with a strong team working for good public services, social fairness and more cohesion communities. Today we are proud that socialists remain at the beating heart of towns and cities across Belgium.”

In Wallonia, Flanders, and Brussels socialists secured strong results.

Wallonia saw a strong socialist showing, with PS remaining the biggest party in Mons, Charleroi, Liège, Seraing, Herstal, Binche, La Louvière and Ath. In Charlerloi, PS party leader Paul Magnette secured a convincing win with PS gaining 2 per cent to reach 43.7 per cent.

In Flanders, Vooruit also performed well. Party leader Conner Rousseau secured the most preferential votes in Sint-Niklaas. In Leuven, Vooruit mayor Mohamed Ridouani secured 41.7 per cent of vote, with other strong results in Ostend, Gent and Turnhout. In Antwerp, Vooruit is expected to enter the city coalition.

Elsewhere in the Brussels-Capital Region (19 districts), PS remains the biggest party in Brussels City, Molenbeek, Saint-Gilles, Evere and Koekelberg. PS Mayors will also lead in Anderlecht and Ixelles and are also set to come to power Schaerbeek and Forest. PS will also be in power in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe and Ganshoren.
