Delays for accession countries unacceptable
Politically motivated delays to the release of the annual reports which assess the progress of Western Balkan countries towards EU membership are unacceptable. This was one of the conclusions of a conference organized by the Party of European Socialists on the challenges facing social democracy in the Western Balkans.
EU referenda – learning the lessons from sister parties across Europe
The Referendum on whether or not Britain should stay in the European Union is a massive milestone for the UK, but also for the whole of the EU. The experiences of other European socialist and social democratic parties from across Europe in campaigning on referenda are valuable in helping Labour as it begins its campaign. This was the subject of an event organised by the the Party of European Socialists (PES) at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, England. The event was chaired by Jan Royall – PES Vice President.
A new deal for a new Europe?
In the wake of multiple crises – the Greek crisis, the refugee crisis and the earlier financial crisis – it is now clear that change is needed in Europe. But what changes are needed, and how it can change, are important subjects for debate. And key ones ahead of the UK referendum on EU membership in 2017. At a cross party discussion and debate on the future of Europe, Sergei Stanishev, PES President outlined what he thinks will be some of the key issues.

The President of the Party of European Socialists (PES) Sergei Stanishev welcomed the news of an agreement to hold early elections in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia:
PES President welcomes the agreement on Greece – “PES avoided a Grexit”
Commenting on the conclusion of the Euro Summit on Greece Sergei Stanishev, President of the Party of European Socialists said:
‘I welcome the agreement reached today at the Euro Summit on Greece. This was a truly historical moment. Europe gave a strong symbol of unity and Greece showed determination to stay in the Eurozone. Grexit scenarios are now part of the past.
PES President: “Europe must find a solution and not miss this window of opportunity “
Ahead of the Euro Summit on Greece, Heads of State of the PES family met to discuss solutions to the Greek crisis. Sergei Stanishev, President of the Party of European Socialists said:
“Today there is a window of opportunity for Europe to avoid a real catastrophe. Europe should not miss it. A solution must be found to maintain Greece in the Eurozone. I am very proud of the catalytic and constructive role that the PES family is playing throughout this crisis.
