Speaking ahead of the Greek referendum this Sunday, Sergei Stanishev, PES President said:
“As the time of the referendum in Greece draws nearer, I want to repeat my message loudly and clearly. The images that we have seen from Greece over the last few days have been painful for all true Europeans to see. The people we saw queuing up for hours are European pensioners, European mothers and fathers. As European Socialists it is for them too that we are fighting, for Greece, whose place is at the heart of the Europe.
Parliament vote crucial to re-legitimise Commission mandate on TTIP
PES President Sergei Stanishev called today for the European Parliament to approve the position negotiated by Socialist and Democrat MEP Bernd Lange in next week’s vote on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). He stressed that the European Parliament (EP) must give a clear mandate to the European Commission to negotiate the trade agreement with the USA.
PES President supports the European Parliament call for a summit on Greece
Sergei Stanishev, President of the Party of European Socialists (PES) commented on the latest situation in Greece.
“The situation in the Eurozone is now critical. At the PES we are steadfast in our position that Greece’s position is in the Eurozone as also stated by Pierre Moscovici – the European Commissioner in charge of Economic and Financial affairs. The door remains open to negotiations, and we remain ready to do whatever it takes to maintain Greece as a full member of the Eurozone and of the European Union. We expect responsible and transparent actions by all.”
PES Prime Ministers urge deal on Greece
Prime Ministers and Heads of State of the Party of European Socialists have met ahead of the European Council meeting in Brussels this afternoon. They urged further progress towards a deal on Greek debt between the Greek Government and Eurozone countries, the IMF and the ECB. Aware of the difficult negotiations they reaffirmed their commitment to Greece remaining in the Eurozone. The current precarious situation is bad for Greece and for Europe, and an urgent conclusion to it is essential.
PES President welcomes EMPL Committee’s rejection of the SUP directive
Yesterday 23 June, in an opinion report, the Employment and social affairs committee (EMPL) of the European Parliament called for the rejection of the Commission proposal for a Directive on Single-member private limited liability companies (SUP – Societas Unius Personae).
PES President urges deal on Greece
PES President Sergei Stanishev met today with the new PASOK leader Ms Fofi Gennimata. He congratulated her on her clear victory and her courage to lead the party at such a crucial time for the country. He reiterated the PES’ full support for PASOK, and for its efforts to reconnect with its membership.
