PES Ministers unite to call for more progressive and socially balanced EMU
The Ministers of European Affairs from the Party of European Socialists (PES) met today in Luxembourg to coordinate their positions, ahead of the General Affairs Council (GAC). The Ministers assessed the challenges of the Economic and Monetary Union and discussed working towards a strong governance framework, calling for a more balanced EMU as a means for promoting a sustainable, fair and progressive society. Completing the EMU framework with a strong social dimension is one way of assuring an increase in the wellbeing of European citizens and preserving the sustainability of the European Social Model.
PES President congratulates ČSSD and Bohuslav Sobotka on their fight for a fair tax system
Speaking at the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) Congress in Prague, PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “I am proud of the work that my friend Bohuslav Sobotka and his government have been doing, establishing a fair system of taxation and fighting against tax evasion – these are important instruments to build a fair and strong country. The Party of European Socialists stands by the side of ČSSD to support an action plan that will help boost the economy, fight unemployment and promote exports and investment”.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) strongly welcomes the recent developments towards a Financial Transaction Tax. The French-Austrian command of the working group was successful in boosting the 11 Member States to move ahead with this crucial measure to reduce speculatory behaviour in the financial markets and creating a new source of revenue for Member States.
PES ECOFIN Ministers discuss the effectiveness of the Commission proposal on Europe’s Investment Plan
The Finance Ministers of the Party of European Socialists (PES) met today at the PES Headquarters in Brussels in preparation of the ECOFIN Council meeting. The chairperson of the meeting and Lithuanian Finance Minister Rimantas Šadžius, addressing the French Finance Minister Michel Sapin, expressed his condolences for the tragic helicopter accident that happened in Argentina causing the death of eight French nationals and two Argentinian pilots: “My deepest condolences for the loss of these people, and my warmest thoughts go to their families and their close ones”.
PES ECOFIN Ministers meet ahead of the ECOFIN Council to discuss the promotion of investment projects in Europe
The Finance Ministers of the Party of European Socialists (PES) met today at the PES headquarters in Brussels in preparation of the Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) Council meeting. The Ministers exchanged their views on the ECOFIN Council agenda, in particular regarding the implementation of the European Investment Plan. They highlighted the importance of the swift implementation of the Plan as well as the need to ensure its efficient and democratic governance.
