Social Dimension of EMU paper a ‘belated and weakened’ attempt to redress neglect of social policy by Barroso Commission
Andor praised for rearguard action to save employment and social developments ‘scoreboard’
The Communication on the strengthening of the social dimension of Economic and Monetary Union is a “belated but weakened attempt to address the imbalance of this Commission’s neglect of European social policy”, says Party of European Socialists President (PES), Sergei Stanishev.
“While it is welcome that the Communication has been published at all, the contents will need serious concrete follow up if the proposal is to have any meaningful impact on the lives of ordinary Europeans”, said Mr. Stanishev.
The delay in EU budget will be worth it if priority of ‘continent-wide’ economic recovery is remembered, says PES President
Responding to the developments today at the EU Council, the Party of European Socialists (PES) President, Sergei Stanishev, has said that the delay in securing an agreement on the EU budget;
“Will be worth the wait if we remember that the single biggest priority is ‘continent-wide’ economic recovery in Europe”.
PES leaders propose plan for EU summit that ‘boosts our economy while strengthening our democracy’
The President of the Party of European Socialists (PES), Sergei Stanishev, has outlined the conclusions of the PES leaders meeting ahead of today’s European Council. Mr Stanishev, who was accompanied by the head of the Portuguese Socialist Party, Antonio Jose Seguro, made a strong call for ‘concrete progressive’ decisions at the EU summit.
PES supports Eurobonds as a “stability and solidarity tool for the Eurozone”
The Party of European Socialists (PES) has expressed its support for making Eurobonds a priority at the next EU summit (28 June). Ahead of the informal EU summit of 23 May, the PES Prime Ministers and leaders met in Brussels to discuss how to promote their growth agenda.
“Invest in EU economy, invest in youth” PES tells European Council
Ahead of the 1st of March EU Summit, the Party of European Socialists (PES) has called for investment in the EU economy and investment in youth. In an open letter sent to the European Council, the PES made a strongly worded critique of existing conservative policies. “Spending cuts, further deregulation of the labour market and liberalisation of the service sector are not the answers”, the letter warns.

“Just like a tax of 0.05% on transactions, today’s events show that it doesn’t matter if the action is small – it all adds up“, so said Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists (PES). Mr. Rasmussen was congratulating the PES activists who staged over 50 events across Europe, on Saturday 24 April, to promote growing calls for a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT).
