PES Leaders: Article 50 must be invoked as quickly as possible
Prime Ministers and Leaders of the Party of European Socialists have agreed that there should be no delay before the UK begins the process to leave the European Union.
Urging the UK and the EU to act calmly and responsibly, the leaders agreed that following Prime Minister Cameron’s resignation a replacement must be selected as soon as possible, so as to start the negotiation process at the earliest possible date.
Open letter from Sergei Stanishev after the UK Referendum
The President of the Party of European Socialists sent a letter to all Prime Ministers, Heads of states, leaders of the PES member parties and to the S&D group in the European Parliament. PES deeply regrets Brexit vote, prepares for changes
PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “I am truly shocked by the result of the referendum. We, the European Progressives, supported our member party – the UK Labour in their campaign for Remain. We wanted a strong Britain in a strong Europe and we were working together for a Social Britain in a Social Europe. Now we have to double our joint efforts.
Progressive European Affairs Ministers in favor of Common Candidate
Progressive European Affairs Ministers backed the idea of a common candidate for the next European elections in 2019. S&D MEP Jo Leinen presented his report on the reform of the EU electoral Law. The participants agreed that the common candidate’s process (Spitzenkandidaten) is an important part of the review as it represents a major improvement in building a European democracy.
PES warmly welcomes new Austrian president Prof. Van der Bellen
The Party of European Socialists warmly congratulates Prof. Alexander Van der Bellen for his election as President of Austria. We explicitly supported his candidacy in the 2nd round, as representing an open, inclusive, modern, tolerant and pro-European Austria.
