The Party of European Socialists (PES) is pleased to celebrate today the inauguration of Chile’s new Social Democratic President, Michelle Bachelet. Vice-President Jan Royall and Deputy Secretary General Marije Laffeber are in Chile to represent the PES.

Tensions have been rising in Ukraine over the weekend, with Russian troops entering the Crimean peninsula adjacent to Russia’s Western borders and a number of violent disturbances being seen in other cities. The PES wants to see an immediate de-escalation and calls for calm on all sides.

On Sunday 15 December, PES Ministers of Foreign Affairs gathered to discuss today’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting. The meeting was led by Jean Asselborn, chair of the PES Foreign Affairs Ministers Network and Foreign Affairs Minister of Luxembourg.

PES meets Prime Minister of Georgia
Today a joint delegation from the PES, S&D Group and the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity met with Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garabshvili and Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze in Tblisi. The main topic of the meeting was the result of the EU Vilnius summit on Eastern Partnership, where the EU and Georgia started the final process for an association agreement.

The PES is following with great concern the current situation in Ukraine. In the last couple of days swelling protests for freedom, democracy and rapprochement towards the EU have been answered by violence on part of the government and police.
