PES President demands release of Palestinian leader on the 12th anniversary of his abduction
On the 25th of March PES President Sergei Stanishev met with Fadwa Barghouti, wife of Marwan Barghouti, renowned Fatah member and Palestinian reconciliation figure. Marwan Barghouti has spent a total of 17 years in prison, of which the last 11 years consecutively. The meeting took place in Amman at the Conference ‘A common vision for a progressive Arab world’ co-organized by the PES on the 24th and 25th of March.

Today, progressive parties from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa came together for a two day conference in Amman to discuss a common progressive agenda. The Conference started with opening speeches from PES President and BSP leader Sergei Stanishev, President of the S&D Group Hannes Swoboda, Jamil Nimri, member of Parliament of the Jordanian Social Democrats, and Hussein Gohar, chair of the Arab Social Democratic Forum.

PES denounces illegal referendum in Crimea
Yesterday the 16th of March a referendum was organized in Crimea where voters could chose between joining Russia, or the return of Ukraine to its status under the 1992 constitution, which would give the region much more autonomy. There was no option for those who wanted the constitution to remain unchanged. According to exit polls, 96% of Crimean voters chose to join Russia.

PES Ministers of foreign affairs gather on the eve of Foreign Affairs Council
On Sunday 16 March, PES Ministers of Foreign Affairs came together to discuss the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Council. Among the issues discussed were the latest developments in Ukraine, including the unconstitutional referendum in Crimea and the sanctions imposed by the EU, and consequences for the Eastern Partnership.
