During her visit to Estonia, Zita Gurmai, PES Women President met with Social Affairs Minister Helmen Kütt and discussed the worrying existing gender pay gap in Estonia.

Power to women for European Elections in Pärnu; closing the gender pay gap!

Today, the Social Democratic Party of Estonia (SDE) is hosting this years 3rd event of the Equal Pay Action Days. Between 9 and 21 April different actions and gatherings are organised to raise awareness and mark the Equal Pay Day in Estonia, which is the highest in the EU reaching 30%. Thanks to KADRI, the SDE women’s organisation, the Equal Pay Day as well as an Action Plan by the government were put into place in 2011 and yearly specific recommendations and actions have been put forward to reduce and eventually close the gender pay gap.

On Saturday 29 March, the Youth Union of the Bulgarian Socialist Party met in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia to elect their new board and to discuss the issues affecting young people across the country. PES Women President Zita Gurmai addressed over 700 delegates from across the country, with a clear focus on youth unemployment and gender equality.

On Wednesday 19 March at 18.00 in the UN headquarters in New York, PES Women and Vision Films presented the film “The Threshold of the Desert”, followed by a debate on women’s empowerment with the participation of representatives from UN Women, UNPD and the civil society.

On this occasion, PES Vice-President Elena Valenciano has denounced that “within the EU borders, a very high number of women are raped, beaten, murdered and subjected to psychological torture. Combating violence against women will be one of the key issues of this campaign for the European elections as it is one of the worst problems of European society.”
