PES & SLD Poland Conference on Gender Equality
PES President calls for a “better Europe built from the inspiring ideas and leadership of both women and men”.
The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) hosted today in Warsaw the 4th “Sejmik Kobiet Lewicy”, the Polish congress of left-wing women, which discussed pivotal issues such as the economy of inequality, education and health, female leadership and the fight against violence.
The event saw the participation of Party of European Socialists (PES) President Sergei Stanishev, PES Women Vice-President Marja Bijl and Deputy Secretary General Marije Laffeber.
PES Women reiterates its support to PSOE in its fight of protection the abortion law introduced by the Zapatero government in 2010
It is a shame that today’s PP government is trying to reduce the law and attack most vulnerable girls. The silent political move of the PP puts forward a proposal to amend the current abortion law, by obliging parental consent for abortion for minors, including for young women suffering from violence from their parents.
PES Women President welcomes UK Labour’s call for “pay transparency” to combat gender pay gap
The Party of European Socialists (PES) Women President Zita Gurmai expresses her full support to the Labour Party’s legislative proposal to compel big companies to publicly reveal the salary difference between women and men and thus combat the pay gap. Tabled today in the Parliament of the United Kingdom, this mandatory publication, called the “pay transparency” for large employers, was already submitted in 2010 but rejected by the conservative government.
PES Women welcomes Italian Presidency engagement on equality
PES Women President Zita Gurmai welcomed today the efforts and engagement made by the Italian Presidency on equality issues: “The Italian Presidency has not only spoken on equality issues, but is also acting on it to make issues like the maternity leave directive and anti-discrimination directive a reality”.

Party of European Socialists President, Sergei Stanishev has welcomed the scrapping of a controversial proposal by the conservative Spanish government to refuse the right to abortion. The Spanish Government u-turn comes after months of pressure from European and global women’s’ rights groups, including PES Women.
