Posting of Workers Directive: steps towards fairer mobility of workers’
European Commission published on 8 March its proposal for a targeted review of the Posting of Workers Directive. This proposal revises the 1996 directive, and complements the process of strengthening EU rules on posting initiated with the Enforcement Directive in 2014.
PES Employment and Finance Ministers aim to strengthen the social dimension of the EU
Employment, Social and Finance Ministers of the Party of European Socialists held a joint meeting today in Brussels to exchange views on the social dimension in the European Semester and the Economic and Monetary Union. The Ministers reaffirmed that social and economic policies need to be better coordinated if the European Union is to achieve sustainable and jobs-rich growth that would increase the living standards of European citizens.
Social Democrats propose solutions to social issues facing youth
High level representatives of the Party of European Socialists (PES) met today in Brussels to discuss hot topics in the field of employment and social affairs, with a particular focus on issues facing young people in Europe. Practical solutions were proposed as part of a Plan for European youth – a major PES project to provide answers to young people’s issues in employment, including through the Youth Guarantee, education and culture as well as to the growing issue of child poverty.
Social Democrats: Solidarity is the alternative to fear
The current crisis in Europe brings fear in the everyday life of the Europeans, and the way to overcome this fear is with more solidarity and more Europe. That was the main message from the international conference “Shaping Change in Turbulent times”, held by the Party of European Socialists (PES) and its German member party the SPD in Berlin on Wednesday.
PES Ministers express concerns at slow rate of social progress
The European Commission’s annual analysis of the socio-economic situation in the EU, the ‘Annual Growth Survey’ published on 26 of November has highlighted that although the overall situation in Europe is slowly improving, this moderate recovery is not yet felt in all countries. Meeting on the 6th of December, PES Ministers for Employment and Social Affairs exchanged views on this key aspect of the European Semester.
PES Ministers of Employment and Social Affairs plan next steps towards a Social Union
Meeting today in Luxembourg, PES Ministers of Employment and Social Affairs reaffirmed their long commitment to foster a real Social Union. In light of the “Five Presidents’ report” on completing the Economic and Monetary Union published in June, they emphasise the need for a social dimension to appear more prominently in the structure and priorities of the EMU and in the whole European Semester.
