Commission Approved by Parliament – strong social democratic voice assured
The European Parliament voted today to approve the Juncker Commission, putting in place eight strong social-democrats who will shape Europe’s future. Frans Timmermans will act as first vice-president, leading the Commission’s work in key policy areas such as sustainable development and the rule of law. Timmermans will also supervise the important balancing act between EU policy and national government sovereignty.
PES President Demands Reaction from Belgian PM to Ministers’ Provocative Actions
PES President Sergei Stanishev today strongly criticised the actions of two Belgian Ministers who have sparked concern with their actions as regards Nazi collaboration in Belgium during World War II. Stanishev called for the Belgian Prime Minister to publicly condemn them. The Ministers’ comments and relationships have caused great concern among the Belgian public, and cast a shadow over the new Conservative-Liberal Government.
PES President opens Romanian Presidential rally of 70,000 Ponta supporters
This weekend saw PES President Sergei Stanishev address the launch of Victor Ponta’s bid to become Romanian President. Stanishev told the 70,000 Ponta supporters that; “the country that you want and you deserve it is a country where democracy is respected by all, where every citizen has access to decent education, decent pensions, where healthcare is a priority…and believe me my friends the only person capable of achieving all this is Victor Ponta”.
The PES celebrates the International Day of Democracy
Today 15th of September on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, dedicated to the engagement of young people on democracy, “the PES strongly reaffirms its respect of EU fundamental values and principles of democracy and the rule of law and its commitment to fight for a strong, socially just and democratic Europe” stated Marije Laffeber, PES Deputy Secretary General.
PES congratulates Sweden’s Social Democrats on election victory
PES President Sergei Stanishev has congratulated Stefan Lofven and the Social Democrats for their victory in Sweden’s general election on Sunday. Speaking from Strasbourg, Mr. Stanishev said that; “The next Swedish Government will be led by Stefan Lofven and by the Social Democrats. This is great for Sweden and for the European Union. Stefan will ensure that Sweden again becomes admired for its values of fairness and solidarity, regardless of background or privilege”.
