PES President Sergei Stanishev participates in Skopje rally in solidarity with FYR Macedonia
Today PES President Sergei Stanishev will join Macedonian citizens and opposition leaders in the Macedonian capital, Skopje, to call for democratic reform and to denounce violence, together with representatives of sister parties. This reflects the PES family’s deep concerns about last weekend’s terrorist attack in Kumanovo, the continuing failure of the government to act on allegations arising from leaks exposing mass surveillance in the country and legal threats against the leader of our sister party SDSM, Zoran Zaev.
PES welcomes strong Agenda on Migration
The PES welcomes the Agenda on Migration released today by the European Commission. This is more than welcome because it offers a holistic and more comprehensive approach to migration and the issues related to it, proposing concrete measures when dealing with an immediate emergency but also foreseeing an effective long-term migration policy which includes recognising economic migrants as an opportunity for all, not a threat.
The PES extremely concerned about growing tensions in FYR Macedonia
The PES is greatly alarmed by the clashes that took place in Kumanovo, FYR Macedonia on Saturday 9 May, killing 8 police officers and injuring 37. The incident took place in a climate of rising tensions, as opposition party SDSM has been releasing evidence indicating widespread phone tapping on part of the government. In the last few days, thousands of people took to the streets to show their dissatisfaction with the current government.
In solidarity with Nepal – Help now!
The PES expresses its full solidarity and empathy with the people of Nepal.
The violent earthquake that struck Nepal last Saturday has caused a death toll of at least 4,400 and has left more than 8,000 injured. Rescuers are working day to try and retrieve survivors from the ruins, while hospitals struggle with overpopulation and lack of medicine.
In order to respond to this horrifying tragedy, the PES supports SOLIDAR’s initiative of an emergency fund for Nepal and calls all institutional partners and individuals to take part to this effort.
