PES calls for an immediate ceasefire in Turkey to protect civilians
The PES joined, on Friday (19 February), an Socialists and Democrat Group fact-finding delegation to Diyarbakir in the south east of Turkey, two days after the Ankara terrorist attack.

The PES welcomes the agreement of 17 major powers to halt the violence in Syria
The PES welcomes the US-Russia-led international agreement to halt the violence in Syria on the basis of a ceasefire to be implemented in the course of one week. The agreement reached today in Munich foresees immediate humanitarian help for the civilian population and urges the regime and opposition forces, excluding ISIS and Al Nusrah, to resume talks in Geneva.
PES Finance Ministers discuss fights against terrorism financing and tax avoidance
The Party of European Socialists Finance Ministers met today in Brussels prior to the ECOFIN Council. The Ministers discussed two documents recently released by the European Commission – the Anti Tax Avoidance Package and the Action Plan to strengthen the fight against the financing of terrorism. PES Finance Ministers emphasized that tax evasion seriously threatens the sustainability of Member States’ public finances, and that combating aggressive tax planning must be one of the EU’s priorities.
Leaders of European Socialists and Democrats urge on political stability in Moldova
President of the S&D Group Gianni Pittella and president of the PES Sergei Stanishev call the Moldovan authorities and all political forces to demonstrate their responsibility towards the country by lowering tensions and guaranteeing stability. That would be the first precondition to successfully face the challenges the country is facing and respect the expectations of the citizens for functioning and fair institutions. Moldova can progress and continue along the European path by striking up the needed reforms.

Stanishev talks to local media from outside of a Prison near Istanbul
An attempt by an official PES delegation in Turkey to visit two Turkish journalists held in prison ended up in an improvised press conference in front of the gates of Silivri Prison near Istanbul. In heavy rain and strong winds, PES President Sergei Stanishev supported esteemed journalists Can Dundar and Erdem Gul – held behind bars since November last year.
