PES preparatory meeting for EU Council: “The EU budget must be based as much on solidarity as on efficiency”

PES calls for European Youth Guarantee to be prioritized.
Party of European Socialists (PES) President Sergei Stanishev said that “Our meeting showed that the PES family knows that what we need is an EU budget that responds to the economic crisis. It must allow us to deliver jobs and growth, and ultimately combat poverty and social exclusion. The European budget must be regarded as an investment budget. This is what will reconnect the European project to the citizens of Europe and convince them that we are working in their interest”.

PES congratulates the Czech Social Democratic Party on victory in regional and senatorial elections

The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the historic victory of the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) in the regional and senatorial elections held in the Czech Republic in the last weeks. On October 12 and 13, the ČSSD won the largest share of the vote in the majority of the regions – 30.37 percent of the overall votes –, and led to a clear victory of the left in the traditionally conservative Senate. This support was amplified in the second round of the senatorial elections on October 19 and 20 with a constitutional majority of 46 seats out of 81. This result makes the PES member party the strongest political force in the upper chamber of the Czech Parliament.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) congratulates the former President of SerbiaBoris Tadić (and current leader of the Serbian Democratic Party) and the President of CroatiaIvo Josipović on being awarded the European Medal of Tolerance. The aim of the prize is to honour extraordinary achievements of tolerance and political reconciliation in Europe. Both leaders are actively involved in the work of the PES.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the victory of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) of Montenegro in yesterday’s parliamentary elections. The “Coalition for a European Montenegro”, formed by the SDP and the DPS – both of them associate parties of the PES – won the elections with strong popular support.
